The decision depends on your timeline, available budget, customer economics and website. Both channels need a clear offer and a usable enquiry journey. Neither guarantees leads just because you invest in it.
Understand the difference
Google Ads can start bringing clicks quite quickly once your ads are approved and running. You do not need to wait for your website to rank organically. You control the budget and targeting, and pay for the traffic your campaign brings.
SEO improves your website’s ability to be found through organic search. It is usually a longer-term campaign, with no per-click charge for organic visits. If your website is not already ranking for relevant searches, it can take time to build visibility and attract visitors. A site that already ranks has a different starting point from one that is barely appearing in search.
When Google Ads may come first
If you need to bring potential customers to your website sooner, Ads may be the more practical starting point while SEO builds momentum. Those early clicks still need to turn into worthwhile enquiries, so allow time to test and improve the campaign. Ads can also help you test demand for a specific service, provided you can fund both advertising and management. Prepare your landing page, tracking and follow-up before launch.
Work from margin, not just job revenue. A $2,000 job does not automatically make a $400 acquisition cost affordable: delivery costs, close rate and repeat business all affect that calculation.
Use the Google Ads calculator to explore assumptions, then check whether the scenario makes commercial sense. Its output is not a forecast or a profit calculation.
When SEO may come first
SEO may suit a business that can invest steadily in its website and local visibility without relying on immediate returns. It can also be a sensible priority when important service information is missing or customers struggle to find accurate business details.
Look at the actual market rather than assuming a regional location will be easy to rank in. Ask what work is needed and how progress will be reviewed. There is no universal timeline or guaranteed cost-per-lead advantage.
When to fix the website first
If people cannot understand your offer or submit an enquiry, address that before increasing traffic. An existing site may only need focused improvements rather than a full rebuild.
- Make services and locations clear.
- Check mobile usability and forms.
- Show relevant evidence of your work.
- Measure enquiries and assign someone to follow up.
Using both without stretching the budget
The channels can support different priorities, but splitting a limited budget across both may leave too little to do either well. Decide what you can sustain and what evidence would justify expanding.
Review actual lead quality and acquisition costs before increasing or reducing a channel. Strong SEO results are not, by themselves, a reason to switch off profitable ads.
